Environmental assessment of fishery resources of Cherkasy region

Nataliia Svoiak, Ludmila Yashchuk, Nelli Zagoruyko

Abstract

Ichthyofauna composition of Cherkasy region is researched and environmental condition in terms of fishery resources is evaluated. Fish stocks of Cherkasy region and the factors that influence on their changes are considered; the analysis of the Program for the development of fishery resources of Cherkasy region ponds in 2014-2020 is conducted. As a result of the research the recommendations concerning the improvement of fishery resources of Cherkasy region are developed. The main reasons for reduction of stocks and catches of fish species in Cherkasy region consist in unfavorable breeding conditions associated with sharp daily fluctuations of water level in the spawning period, leading to massive loss of spawning grounds for fish eggs and larvae of fish; great reduction in spawning for producers and fattening for youth shallow areas due to the lack of meadow vegetation on them, abundant overgrowth of air-water plants and water logging; storage reservoir pollution caused by sewage of industrial, agricultural and municipal enterprises; increasing scales of amateur fishing, which in summer removes a large number of young species of fish, especially bream; removal of young commercial fish from reservoirs in the intakes; marked predominance of similar fishing gear. To save in Cherkasy region areas of water, that provide conditions for the existence of fish at all stages of development (spawning, feeding, wintering), a set of environmental, breeding and reclamation measures that limit economic activity, especially in shallow coastal zone, should be developed
